Beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid HCl (Phenibut) a neuropsychotropic drug introduced into clinical practice in Russia in the 1960s. It has anxiolytic and nootropic (cognition enhancing) effects, acts as a GABA-mimetic, stimulates dopamine receptors and antagonizes beta-phenethylamine (PEA), an endogenous anxiogenic. Phenibut helps relieve anxiety, lessen the effects of stress, elevates mood and induces sleep and relaxation.
Gamma-ethylamino-L-glutamic acid (L-theanine) an amino acid found in the tea plant. L-theanine creates a sense of relaxation approximately 30 minutes after ingestion via stimulating the production of alpha brain waves, creating a state of deep relaxation and mental alertness and via the formation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA which influences the levels of two other neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin, producing a relaxation effect.
5-HTP works in the brain and central nervous system by increasing the production of the chemical serotonin and is believed to play an important role in treating insomnia.
Melatonin a hormone produced by the pineal gland that maintains the body's circadian rhythm (an internal 24-hour clock that plays a critical role in sleep patterns). Melatonin may help people with disrupted circadian rhythms and those with low melatonin level to sleep better.
